Lesson 3: Size Matters.

Choose a memory foam mattress sized according to your needs.

Twin, also known as single:

Dimensions: 39” wide by 75” long.

This mattress are great for children, bunk beds, dorm rooms, and guest bedrooms. It may be too small for tall guys and couples.

Twin extra long:

Dimensions: 39” wide by 80” long.

An alternative to the regular twin, this mattress adds 5” in length for tall guys. Sheets may be more difficult to find, but should be readily available online.

Double, also known as full:

Dimensions: 54” wide by 75” long.

This mattress allows more room for movement and stretching, though it may be short for some teens and adults. It is a great alternative for singles who find twin beds too cramped.

Queen:

Dimensions: 60” wide by 80” long.

If you anticipate sharing your mattress with someone now or in the future, a queen is the smallest size recommended. It is great for those with extra height and couples who like to get close.

Kings:

A king memory foam mattress may be the most expensive, but it allows the most room for anyone who really likes their space. When purchasing a king bed, you’ll need to consider whether you prefer length or width in bed. There are two types of king mattresses:

  1. Standard king, or eastern king:

Dimensions: 76” wide by 80” long, or 4” wider than its counterpart.

  1. Western king, or California king:

Dimensions: 72” wide by 84” long, or 4” longer than its counterpart.
